Red Flags: Tips to help you avoid internet scams when renting or buying a home

When searching for either a home or a rental, be aware of internet scams.  Con-artists posing as owners often times list too-good-to-be-true deals. Here are tips offered by Officer Kathleen Poirier of the Wellesley Police Department to keep in mind when searching online for rentals or purchases:

  1. The homeowner/landlord claims to be out of state or the country and cannot meet in person.
  2. The homeowner/landlord will only communicate through e-mail or phone. Never in person.
  3. The homeowner/landlord will ask for money without letting you inside of the home.
